IAM support for proposed new drink drive limits

A lower drink driving limit will make people think twice before getting behind the wheel, says the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Proposed new limits will make drivers think twice before they drink.
The UK's largest independent road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists, has announced its support of today's Government-commissioned report which recommends a reduction in drink drive limits.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the IAM, however stressed that proper enforcement would be the only way to ensure any new limits would have the desired effect of reducing road casualties.

"A lower limit will hopefully make many more drivers think twice about drinking at all before getting behind the wheel," said Greig. "Drivers will also be more likely to get caught the morning after, but only if sufficient police are out there enforcing the law.

"Many repeat offenders think they're invincible, and ultimately it is fear of being caught that will eradicate drink driving rather than stronger penalties."

The response comes after a report, carried out by Sir Peter North, recommended a reduction of the current limit of 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg.
